Here’s what I always keep an eye out for:
  • 🎨 Craft Supplies
    Think pipe cleaners, pom-poms, stickers, markers, glue sticks—you name it. These are perfect for creation activities in your Future Ready Studio, especially when students are building models, posters, or prototypes.
  • 🎲 Game Pieces & Boards
    Old board games can be repurposed for all sorts of content review or classroom challenges. Dice, spinners, chips, cards, and boards all increase student engagement and add a playful twist to studio learning.
  • 🪑 Flexible Furniture
    Look for small tables, rolling carts, bean bags, game chairs, stools, or cozy rugs. These pieces help you design comfortable, flexible studio spaces that support student choice and movement.
The key? Go in with a creative mindset. A box of mismatched Scrabble tiles could become a spelling challenge. A rug might define the space for a reflection station. Garage sale treasures help you build a rich, hands-on learning environment without spending top dollar.

One of the most powerful tools for managing time and ensuring smooth transitions in a blended learning environment is the use of timers. Timers can keep students on track, promote self-regulation, and support differentiated instruction. Here’s how you can effectively use timers to enhance your classroom environment.

​Start with a Whole Group Timer

Begin with a whole group timer that keeps all students moving through the learning studios at the same pace. For instance, set a countdown timer visible to all students. This helps establish a sense of urgency and provides a clear expectation for how long each activity should take. As students become familiar with the routines, they develop a sense of pacing.
✅ Pro Tip: Keep your studios to 8-10 minutes when first training students to navigate the learning studios. Remember, the ultimate goal is for students to transition seamlessly and work at their own pace.

Move to a Class Countdown Timer

After introducing the whole group timer, move to a class countdown timer that shows how much time is left in the class period. This allows students to plan and adjust their work speed, ensuring they stay on track. For example, if there are four studios and 40 minutes, you might display a countdown of 40 minutes, with periodic reminders of how much time remains.
✅ Pro Tip: Use a visual countdown timer with clear reminders to foster student agency as they work through the studios. This approach minimizes interruptions during your small group instruction.

Show a Transition Timer for Quick Movement

A transition timer is another powerful tool in the blended learning environment. Displaying a clear countdown for transition time between studios helps students move quickly and efficiently. Students can see how much time they have to clean up their current studio and move to the next. This visual cue promotes smooth transitions and minimizes wasted time. Make sure the transition expectations are clear (e.g., calm, quiet, and efficient).

  • Small Group Studio: 8 minutes for open-ended questions.

Progression Boards: The Secret to Managing Self-Paced Learning Studios

One of the most exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) parts of launching
blended learning studios is giving students the freedom to move at their own pace. But with that freedom comes a big question for teachers: How do I manage it all?
That’s where progression boards come in—and they’re a game-changer.

What is a Progression Board?

A progression board is a simple but powerful tool that helps students visually track their progress through the learning studios. Whether it's a paper-based checklist, a whiteboard tracker, or a digital dashboard, the goal is the same:
✅ Show what has been completed
⚠️ Highlight what still needs attention
🎯 Give both students and teachers a real-time pulse on the learning
In the video I recently shared, I showcased a one-day progression board in action. Students were moving at their own pace through four stations: Small Group, Independent Practice, Digital Content, and Future Ready. As they completed each studio, they checked it off on their board.

What the Progression Board Revealed

Let’s talk about two students from the video:
  • Student A had all four studios checked off. Was she truly finished? Did she rush through the work? Did she need enrichment or extension activities? Was the task too easy?
  • Student B had zero boxes marked. Was he absent? Did he get stuck on one studio? Did he struggle to stay focused? Or did he just forget to update the board?
In both cases, the progression board gave me, the teacher, instant insight into what was happening in the room—without constantly hovering or calling students out. It helped me know who to check in with and why.

Adding a Layer of Accountability

To make the progression board even more effective, I added a completion percentage system. Before students leave for the day, they log how many studios they completed:
  • 4/4 = 100%
  • 3/4 = 75%
  • 2/4 or less = time for a check-in
Not only does this give me data, but it opens the door for gamification. You can create leaderboards, weekly progress goals, or even studio completion badges. Students start to take more ownership of their time and choices when they see progress as part of the learning journey.

Blended Learning Studios: How to Start Simple and Build Toward Student Agency

If you're curious about how to get started with blended learning studios, you’re in the right place! Whether you're new to the approach or looking to refine your practice, the best way to begin is by starting with a lesson you’ve already planned.

Step 1: Use What You Already Have

Don’t overthink it! Look at an upcoming lesson and break it into three parts. These become your first three learning studios:
  • Small Group Instruction: Meet with a few students at a time to reteach, extend, or assess.
  • Independent Practice: Use this station for paper-pencil tasks, hands-on activities, or practice work tied to your lesson goals.
  • Digital Content: Let students engage with a tech-based resource—videos, online tools, or adaptive programs that support the day’s topic.
All students rotate between these stations using a 10-minute timer, which helps build routines and manage time effectively. This structure keeps things predictable and focused while allowing you, the teacher, to guide instruction in a manageable way.

​Step 2: Add a Fourth Studio—Student Collaboration

Once the first three studios are running smoothly, it’s time to introduce a fourth station: Student Collaboration. This is where the magic starts to grow! Let students work together on projects, peer teaching, discussion prompts, or problem-solving tasks that spark critical thinking and communication skills.
By now, the classroom feels different. Students are active, learning in different ways, and you're moving from a one-size-fits-all lesson to targeted support and student-centered engagement.

Step 3: Shift from Timed Rotations to Student Pace, Place, and Path

Eventually, you can move beyond the 10-minute timer. As students develop independence and as your confidence grows, transition toward flexible rotations. Students begin moving at their own pace, place, and path, making choices about how they learn best. This is where true differentiation happens, and data-driven instruction becomes the foundation of your small groups.
💡 Remember: This is just the starting point. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. Every studio day is a chance to reflect, adjust, and grow alongside your students.
