Why should we differentiate instruction? Studies have shown that not all students learn at the same pace. When we start to differentiate instruction, we realize that students learn through different learning modalities. Differentiated instruction is not a fix for struggling students, but it also provides learning opportunities for gifted students to expand their learning. The average student now can move ahead while extra support is given to a struggling student or more in-depth small group instruction is given to enrich the content to some students. With everyone learning at their own pace, behavior problems will decrease, engagement levels will rise, and academic scores will improve.
