Blended Learning Studio Kickoff Checklist: 5 Steps to Start the Year Strong

8/14/2025

Launching blended learning in your classroom can feel exciting—and maybe a little overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to have it all perfect on day one. With a clear plan and a few intentional moves, you can create an engaging, student-centered environment that grows over time.
Here’s my five-step kickoff checklist to help you start small, build momentum, and set your students up for success.
1. Prepare Your Space

Your physical setup plays a huge role in how smoothly your studios will run.
  • Create distinct studio areas for Small Group, Independent Practice, Digital Content, and Collaboration/Future Ready activities.
  • Label and post signs so students know exactly where each station is located. - Studio Icons and Signs can be found in our Starter Kit
  • Check your tech—log in ahead of time, open key programs, and bookmark frequently used tools.

Pro Tip: Think about traffic flow. Avoid bottlenecks by spacing out stations and leaving clear walkways for rotations.
Picture
2. Set Student Expectations

Studios are only as effective as the systems that support them.
  • Introduce Studio Norms early—cover voice levels, transition routines, and how to ask for help.
  • Model rotations. Yes, actually walk students through the process before they try it on their own.
  • Use a visual rotation chart or a timer so students stay on track without constant reminders.
Pro Tip: Practice rotations with non-academic activities first to lower the pressure and make learning the system fun.
Picture
3. Start Small

It’s tempting to launch with the full model right away, but starting smaller ensures success.
  • Begin with just two studios during the first week.
  • Once students are comfortable, add the remaining studios until you reach three or four.
  • Focus on quality over quantity—strong, well-prepared activities in fewer studios will beat rushed activities in all four.
Pro Tip: Use early weeks to refine your routines before layering in more complexity.

4. Make Data the Driver

Your small groups should be purposeful, not just random.
  • Group students based on MAP, STAAR, or other formative data.
  • Keep groups flexible—adjust as you gather new information about student needs.
  • Use small group time to reteach concepts, extend learning, or challenge advanced learners.
Pro Tip: Even a five-minute mini-assessment can help you make better grouping decisions.

5. Build Engagement from Day One

Blended learning isn’t just about stations—it’s about creating a learning environment students want to be part of.
  • Offer at least one choice-based activity each week to promote ownership.
  • Mix hands-on activities with digital tools to keep variety high.
  • Use quick exit tickets to check for understanding and adjust for the next day.
Pro Tip: Engagement grows when students see their work matter. Showcase their projects, progress, and creative ideas often.

Final WordRemember, consistency—not perfection—builds a sustainable studio model. Start with what you have, refine as you go, and celebrate small wins with your students.

When Passion Meets Purpose: Why I Love Speaking About AI in Education

6/23/2025

Last week, I had the opportunity to present my session on AI tools for educators at the Learning Forward Texas conference—and I walked away reminded why I do this work.
After the session, I received a message from Destiny Wagner, co-founder of EdTech Nerds, that made me pause, smile, and reflect. She wrote:
“I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your fantastic session on AI tools… I walked away feeling genuinely inspired and informed…”
Picture
Destiny first saw me present at ISTE a few years ago, and to know she returned to my session and found it just as valuable this time around? That’s the kind of full-circle moment that reminds me how powerful this work can be.
She mentioned how approachable and energizing the session felt—even in the middle of my whirlwind travel week! That’s because I believe in making big concepts (like AI in education) feel accessible, practical, and even fun for teachers who are doing the real work in schools every day.
Whether it's a packed room at a national conference or a coaching session with a small team, I always aim to spark ideas and give educators tools they can use tomorrow.
To Destiny—and every educator I’ve had the chance to work with—thank you. Your curiosity, feedback, and enthusiasm fuel everything I do.
Let’s keep learning, experimenting, and elevating what’s possible in the classroom—together.

From Coaching to AI: How Marcia Kish is Redefining Blended Learning

4/30/2025

Interview with Dr. Shawn Edmondson
Meet Marcia Kish, a nationally recognized instructional coach, author of The Field Guide to the 12 Elements of Student Engagement and Ownership, and the creative force behind DynaGuide — an AI-powered coaching tool for educators. For over a decade, Marcia has helped schools across the country implement blended learning strategies that ignite both student growth and teacher passion.
In this interview, we sat down with Marcia to unpack what’s working in professional development, how schools can shift their mindset about technology, and why small changes can lead to big transformation.

Why Blended Learning?

For Marcia, the shift to blended learning started with one powerful realization:
“It’s not just about adding technology — it’s about creating flexible, student-centered environments where real growth happens.”
Blended learning, she explains, empowers teachers to differentiate instruction, respond to real-time data, and give students more ownership over their learning. It turns educators into designers of learning experiences — and that, she says, is a game changer.

The Most Common Hurdles in Engagement

Marcia’s Field Guide outlines 12 elements that foster student ownership and engagement — but two in particular tend to trip up schools:
  1. Data-Driven Instruction
Many teachers struggle with implementing data-driven instruction — not because they don’t value data, but because they’re overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data points and unsure how to translate it into differentiated small group instruction. Marcia works with teachers to simplify the process by starting with just one or two key data sources and using those to form flexible groups. From there, they co-create systems — like rotation charts, progression boards, or digital trackers — that make managing multiple learning levels feel more doable.
“Once teachers see how to streamline data use and apply it practically, they feel empowered to meet learners where they are — and small group instruction becomes purposeful instead of stressful.”
  2. Self-Pacing and Progress Monitoring
This challenges the traditional model of everyone moving at the same pace. Marcia recommends starting small — using progression boards or student checkpoints — to build clarity and confidence in pacing.
“When teachers see that pacing doesn’t mean ‘anything goes’ — it means ‘clear goals and accountability’ — the energy in the classroom shifts.”

Reframing Blended Learning for School Leaders

Too often, Marcia says, district leaders think blended learning is just “putting kids on devices.” She flips that narrative:
“It’s not about the tech — it’s about designing intentional learning experiences that combine the best of face-to-face instruction with digital flexibility.”
By focusing on why blended learning matters — personalization, differentiation, and student ownership — leaders begin to shift from buying tools to redesigning instruction.

DynaGuide: AI-Driven Coaching in Action

So how does AI fit into all this? Enter DynaGuide, Marcia’s latest innovation.
This AI-powered coaching tool helps teachers make faster, smarter decisions about instruction — from forming small groups to targeting skill gaps.
“It’s like having an instructional coach at your fingertips.”
In early pilot programs, schools using DynaGuide reported:
  • 25% increase in differentiated small groups
  • Nearly 20% boost in student engagement scores

AI vs. Human Coaches: Where Each Shines

While tools like DynaGuide and IRIS Connect use AI to analyze classroom video and offer feedback, Marcia is clear: AI doesn’t replace human coaches.
“AI can tell you what’s happening. But it can’t tell you why it’s happening — or how to adjust for your unique classroom.”
Coaching, she says, is still rooted in trust, relationships, and context.

Using Video as a Tool for Growth

Marcia is a big believer in using video to power teacher reflection. Her best practices?
  • Start with strengths to build trust.
  • Use short clips instead of full lessons to keep reflection focused.
  • Pair with guided questions like “Where did you see student ownership?” to drive actionable feedback.
“When teachers see their own growth in real time, they want to keep watching and improving.”

The Power of Small Wins

One of Marcia’s most popular Weekly Blend episodes was called Small Changes, Big Impact — and it struck a chord with educators.
“Teachers felt relieved to hear that they didn’t have to change everything at once — that even small shifts, like a student goal board or rotating choice stations, could create real momentum.”
This feedback shaped how Marcia now delivers PD: focusing on realistic, ready-to-implement strategies that empower teachers from day one.

Building Buy-In for New Tech

When rolling out new PD tools or tech platforms, Marcia advises districts to:
  • Involve teachers early as co-designers, not just users
  • Start with the “why”, connecting the tool to actual teacher goals
  • Celebrate small successes publicly to build momentum
“Change sticks when teachers feel heard, supported, and able to see real benefits — not when they feel mandated.”

Coaching in a Hybrid World

Virtual coaching has expanded Marcia’s reach across the U.S. and beyond, making it easier to provide consistent support — but it also comes with challenges.
“Trust takes more effort online. You have to be really intentional about creating connection.”
Her solution? Frequent, interactive sessions, reflection tools, and steady follow-up to keep the coaching human — even when the setting is virtual.

Over the past few months, I had the incredible opportunity to partner with the passionate educators at Emery Elementaryfor a four-part professional development series focused on one powerful goal: using data to drive instruction that truly meets student needs.

This Data-Driven Instruction Workshop Series was designed to go beyond simply looking at numbers—we aimed to equip teachers with the tools, strategies, and confidence to turn their MAP, formative, and summative data into actionable instructional plans.
Book This Workshop Series For Your School
Each workshop session was strategically scheduled during four different planning periods throughout the school year—making the most of teachers' time without adding extra meetings. We kicked things off right after the fall MAP assessment, so teachers could immediately put their fresh data to work. From day one, we dove deep into the reports and used them to build purposeful, targeted student groupings that set the tone for impactful instruction all year long.

Here’s a closer look at what we accomplished together:
Picture
🔍 October Workshop : Diving Into the DataWe began our series by exploring the wide range of reports available through MAP and other assessment tools. Teachers learned how to interpret key metrics, identify student trends, and spot opportunities for instructional impact. It wasn’t just about finding gaps—it was about uncovering potential.

🧩 November Workshop: Designing Data-Driven Small Groups & Learning PathwaysOnce we had a solid understanding of the data, we used it to create purposeful small groups. But we didn’t stop there. Teachers also designed meaningful, independent learning experiences for students not in the small group—ensuring that every student had access to engaging, targeted instruction throughout the learning block.
🤖 February Workshop: Differentiating with AI & Winter Data PointsWith updated winter data in hand, we explored how AI tools and edtech resources can support differentiation. Teachers experimented with tools that help tailor assignments, generate leveled content, and scaffold learning—all with the goal of meeting students exactly where they are.
🎯 March Workshop: Creating End-of-Year Projects Based on Student DataTo cap it all off, we used everything we learned to design differentiated end-of-year projects. These projects were not only aligned to grade-level standards, but also personalized based on student strengths, needs, and growth data. The result? Authentic assessments that reflect both mastery and creativity.
